Blackbutt Arts Strategy 2026

VISION

  • Blackbutt will be the South Burnett region’s major hub for arts and creativity, inspiring positive social and economic development outcomes for our community.
GOALS

  1. We will share our unique local stories by creating new, place-based arts initiatives and adding value to existing activities

  2. We will build capacity and leadership in the local arts sector and use the arts to connect our community

  3. We will harness the arts as a tool to strengthen and build economic and social resilience in our local community

What did we achieve in the first year?

$58,744 human resourcing, plus $73,449.65 in project cash

Initially, seed funding was secured from the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR) to support the development of the Blackbutt Arts Strategy, a Big Avocado Project Plan, and the engagement of a dedicated Arts Officer.

In addition, and as a result of resourcing our arts initiative, numerous grant funding programs and sponsors invested their grant funding into Blackbutt Arts Strategy initiatives in 2021/2022.

Below is a snapshot of the projects and their outcomes.

Big Avocado Competition

“The Design Your Own Big Avocado competition is
seeking to start a conversation with the Blackbutt community, as well as avo-fans across the
country. There’s a network of over 150 ‘Big Things’ across Australia and it’s been fantastic to
see the excitement building around Kingaroy’s upcoming ‘Big Peanut’ – so we’re asking the
community, what would it look like if Blackbutt had a ‘Big Thing’ attraction?””

In July 2021, we asked the community what their ‘Big Avocado’ tourist attraction for Blackbutt would look like. Artists, budding designers, school students and community members contributed drawings and ideas as part of this competition, with special mention to the students at Blackbutt State School for embracing their design concepts with such enthusiasm!
